What is long term care? People who need ongoing assistance with
the activities of daily living (ADLs) due to a prolonged physical
illness, disability, or cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer's
disease need long term care. ADLs include activities that you might
take for granted your ability to do independently such as bathing, eating,
dressing, toileting, continence and transferring. People who need long term
care may receive it in a setting such as a nursing home or assisted living
facility, or in their own homes.1
Who pays for long term care? Many people believe that Medicare or Medicaid pay
for long term care. However, Medicare only pays for the cost of some
skilled care in an approved setting under specific circumstances,
not to exceed 100 days per benefit period. Medicaid only pays for long term care for low-income individuals who have spent most or all of their assets.2
